What is the Paris Marathon?
The Paris Marathon, also known as the Marathon de Paris, is an annual festival which is hosted in Paris, France. This campaign is a marathon race which bags the second most finishers in the world. The first one being the New York City Marathon. It was first established in the year 1976 and has been a home to 49,155 participants (in 2019).
The racing course
This renowned marathon begins on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. It again goes downhill to circle round the Place de la Concorde before turning right onto Rue de Rivoli. The route also surpasses through Louvre, after which it goes round the Place de la Bastille. It further moves down to Boulevard Soult to the Bois de Vincennes.
The halfway point of the marathon is met at Rue de Charenton. After that, it passes through Île de la Cité and then Pont Neuf. The participants can meet a massive drink station at Trocadéro, opposite the Eiffel Tower. Towards the end, the route continues alongside Seine, branching off east to Bois de Boulogne. Finally, the end point is met at Avenue Foch.
The 2020 Paris Marathon being cancelled due to rising Covid-19 cases in France
The 2020 edition of the Paris Marathon has been recently cancelled. The organisers have confirmed about this in a recent press meet. They have remarked that due to the rising cases of Covid-19, the marathon has been cancelled. The decision was taken by keeping the importance of everyone’s health and safety.
The marathon was initially planned to be conducted on April 5th, 2020. However, it was later shifted to 15th November, 2020 due to the ongoing global pandemic.
After having tried everything to maintain the event, we, alongside the City of Paris, feel obliged to cancel the 2020 edition of the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris and the Paris Breakfast Run,” the organisers said in a statement.
They further added, “Faced with the difficulty that many runners, especially those coming from abroad, had in making themselves available… it was decided that it would be better… for those concerned if we organised the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris in 2021. We will be working side-by-side with the City of Paris to put on a 2021 edition that brings together the most passionate runners on the most beautiful streets in the world.”
The Paris Marathon in itself is a huge festival in the country. It is one of the most popular global event in tue calendar and hence is widely followed by many. This sport extravaganza bags one of the most highest viewers in the season. It is undoubtedly one of the most sought after and followed campaign in the globe.
On a regular basis, the marathon attracts millions of viewers and approximately 40,000 + participants. It is extremely unfortunate that the marathon is being cancelled due to the advent of the noval coronavirus cases.
It is not only the Paris Marathon which is getting cancelled due to the global pandemic
Along with it, other important events from the calender also got cancelled. Out of the many, the New York City Marathon is one, which was cancelled. The Boston Marathon was also summed up and scrapped due to the high risk that the pandemic has been imposing.
For the first time in the history, the iconic Boston Marathon is getting cancelled. Never before than now has it been cancelled in its 124 years of presence in the history.
The other Marathon jaints like Berlin and Chicago were also cancelled recently. The London Marathon, which was set to be held on 5th April has been postponed to October 4. However, it will only be conducted as a ‘elite-only’ event.
